The Gawler Bunyips travelled to Pooraka for a game against Pooraka. It was good to see good player numbers which gave the Bunyips 6 on the bench.

In perfect conditions both sides were hard at it from the first bounce. Gawler centre line players were given first use of the ball with some great ruck work from Jason Holbrook. Coach Thompson had 2 goals on the board within the first 5 minutes. Pooraka fought back late in the quarter to even the scores at quarter time.

The second quarter was more of the same with a battle of defences. Gawler defence led by Stan Cordwell at full back were standing firm and great run out of defence by Fred Ness and Adrian Watts gave Gawler plenty of opportunity to go into attack. Gawler were having a bad day with their delivery of the ball to their forwards just could not hit a target. Pooraka scored a drop kick super goal (worth 12 points) which again saw the game even at half time.

Third quarter, Gawler jumped Pooraka early and scored 2 goals through Craig Palmer and Rod Knight, but from then on it was the defences of both sides who controlled the game. Gawler managed to keep Pooraka goal less and finished the quarter 11points up.

The game was set up for a great finish. Pooraka came out firing the tempo had stepped up another notch and Pooraka had posted 3 quick goals. Gawler steadied and finished off the quarter with goals from Rod Knight 2 and Mark Buscumb to run out eventual winners by 11 points.
A great team effort with everyone contributing across the ground.
